Artist's Comments

Top image is a promotional still from the new Star Trek film. I wanted to do a pic of Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto), but I painted them (in acrylic, as usual) on separate 16X20 canvas sheets, on the off-chance that I might get an opportunity to give them each their halves some day, at a con or something.

I tell you what, though, I'm never doing one painting on two canvases again! XD I had to do a considerable amount of work on the middle in Photoshop. The images overlap by two inches on each canvas, so that each character could be centered on their respective canvas. Despite having each picture positioned exactly the same with the same lighting when I took the shot, the colours weren't the same. Plus I didn't paint things as precisely as I'd hoped, even with the grid overlay I used. And Spock's head's a bit too big. Ah well, it could have been worse. All in all, I don't think it turned out too badly, even with the experimentation in lighting ....

See the WIP progression here: [link]

*EDITED* Uploaded a darker version, closer to the original paintings -- the other was too washed out by the flash ... Also fixed the link to the WIP. XD

Kirk and Spock © Paramount. Pine and Quinto © themselves.

Yeah, part of that is because of difficulties with the camera, and part of it is because I just can't seem to attain anything approaching that vibrancy with my acrylics. One of these days I'll buy the gooooood stuff -- what I have at the mo is the bulk stuff for crafting. XD I suppose I could have adjusted it even further in Photoshop, but I find when I do that things start to get posterised.

Thanks!

Oddly, Zazhary Quinto's head looks too big in the photograph as well. o.o
